- Overview

Algorithmic warfare is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in warfare. It can operate without human intervention or intelligence.

The military uses algorithms to:

  • Define and predict adversaries
  • Develop staff estimates
  • Develop courses of action

The military also uses AI in other ways, including:

  • Automatically searching for vulnerabilities in enemy systems to exploit
  • Detecting weaknesses in their own systems
  • Helping search for landmines
  • Finding missing people
  • Mapping vulnerable populations in war zones
  • Trying to understand patterns of violence by armed forces and armed groups over time

While highly advanced, AI algorithms may still make errors or misinterpret situations, potentially leading to catastrophic outcomes. Additionally, the absence of human judgment in critical situations may escalate conflicts without a clear understanding of the repercussions.
