- Overview

Open RAN (Open Radio Access Network) is a cellular network architecture that disaggregates traditional, single-vendor hardware components into open, interoperable modules using standardized interfaces defined by the O-RAN ALLIANCE.

1. Key Architecture Components:

  • O-RU (Radio Unit): Handles the radio frequency signals and low-PHY processing near the antenna.
  • O-DU (Distributed Unit): Manages high-PHY, MAC, and RLC layer functions for latency-sensitive tasks.
  • O-CU (Centralized Unit): Controls higher-layer protocols like PDCP, SDAP, and RRC.
  • RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC): Introduces a programmable software layer (Near-RT and Non-RT RIC) that uses automation, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to optimize network performance.
  • SMO (Service Management and Orchestration): Provides automated lifecycle management for network functions.

2. Core Benefits:

  • Multi-Vendor Interoperability: Operators can mix and match hardware and software from different suppliers (e.g., radios from Vendor A and baseband software from Vendor B) instead of relying on a single closed ecosystem.
  • Cloudification & Virtualization: RAN software runs on general-purpose Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) hardware or cloud-native infrastructure.
  • Reduced Vendor Lock-In & Lower TCO: Increases market competition, lowers total cost of ownership, and speeds up the deployment of 4G and 5G services.

- The O-RAN Alliance

Open RAN (O-RAN) is an ongoing shift in mobile network architecture that enables service providers to use non-proprietary subcomponents from a variety of vendors. Open RAN, or Open Radio Access Networks, is made possible by a set of industry standards that telecommunications vendors can follow when producing related equipment. Open RAN supports programmable, intelligent, disaggregated, virtualized and interoperable functions.

Specifically, the proprietary Remote Radio Head (RRH) and Baseband Unit (BBU) are now decomposed into Radio Units (RUs), Distributed Units (DUs), and Centralized Units (CUs), many of which can be virtualized or containerized change. The interface between these new components is open and interoperable.

The O-RAN Alliance defines the specifications of all Open RAN components and the interfaces between them. Founded in 2018, the O-RAN Alliance is a progressive global community of mobile network operators, manufacturers, suppliers, and research and academic organizations working in the global telecommunications sector.

Generally, Open RAN refers to a decentralized radio access network with open interfaces between network components from multiple vendors, while O-RAN refers to the O-RAN Alliance and its work.

- Open RAN Use Cases

Open RAN (Open Radio Access Network) uses standardized, open interfaces to disaggregate hardware and software, allowing mobile operators and enterprises to mix and match components from multiple vendors.

Major Open RAN Use Cases:

  • 5G Network Deployment: Leverages a modular approach and cloud-native or virtualized infrastructure (vRAN) to handle 5G’s high-performance demands, fast rollouts, and ongoing software upgrades.
  • Private Cellular Networks: Enables enterprises to build tailored, private local networks using multi-vendor equipment while custom-fitting security and privacy controls to specific business needs.
  • Rural Connectivity: Uses commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and flexible deployment models to lower capital costs, making it more economical to extend mobile coverage into rural or underserved areas.
  • Network Densification: Supports incremental scaling by deploying edge-based RAN units and additional capacity modules over time to handle high-traffic urban areas.
  • AI-Driven Operations and Automation: Integrates RAN Intelligent Controllers (RIC) and Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) to run AI/ML workloads for real-time traffic optimization, automated performance tuning, and multi-vendor assurance.
