- Overview

Cyber-physical systems (CPS) in healthcare merge physical medical devices, sensors, and human physiology with digital computation, real-time communication networks, and cloud analytics to bridge physical and virtual care environments.

1. How CPS Improve Communication and Care:

  • Real-Time Patient Monitoring: Wearable sensors and body area networks (BANs) continuously track vital signs (such as heart rate or glucose levels) and stream data to cloud platforms or central surveillance centers without requiring active, manual checks by nurses.
  • Automated Alerts and Decision Support: When patient data crosses critical thresholds, the system generates automated alarms or clinical decision-support prompts for physicians and health personnel.
  • Remote and Telehealth Integration: CPS connect patients at home—including high-risk or rural populations—directly with clinicians through integrated feedback loops, reducing the frequency of in-person hospital visits.
  • Closed-Loop Actuation: Devices such as pacemakers, insulin pumps, and automated infusion systems sense biological changes and immediately deliver physical interventions.
