The Power of Genomics in Agriculture

- Genomics: Agricultural Innovation

Agrigenomics is the application of genomics in agriculture to improve the productivity and sustainability of crop and livestock production. There is an increasing demand for experts who understand both the basics of agricultural production and the application of genomics to crop and livestock breeding and production.

Our knowledge of genome organization and gene function has increased substantially since the beginning of this century. The shift from single-gene analysis to genome-wide analysis and the complete sequencing of higher eukaryotic genomes and transcriptomes opens up the possibility of understanding how all genes work together.

These recent advances have had a huge impact on agricultural research. Analyzing entire genomes will provide further insight into evolutionary processes and how modern crops and livestock evolved from their ancestors. In addition, we can select individuals for genotyping based on whole-genome sequences or whole-genome SNP arrays.

- Plant Genes, Genomes and Genetics

Plant Genes, Genomes and Genetics provides comprehensive treatment of all aspects of plant gene expression. It uniquely addresses this topic from a plant perspective, emphasizing the importance of key processes, many discovered for the first time in plants, that influence how plants develop and interact with their environment.

Agrigenomics uses technology to study and classify plant genes to develop new, specific crop varieties. These new crops could help solve a variety of food problems around the world and could improve the productivity and sustainability of many plant species and livestock production.

Genomic innovations have enabled advances in crop development, such as selection for agriculturally desirable traits. These promising traits often include higher yielding crops, stress tolerance and insect resistance.

Overall, the use of genomics can accelerate the development of crops and livestock with traits that enhance sustainability or meet consumer demand.
