- Overview

OpenClaw is an open-source, autonomous AI agent that runs on personal hardware to manage files, emails, calendars, and browser tasks.

OpenClaw acts as a proactive personal assistant, offering 24/7 automation via messaging apps like WhatsApp or Telegram. It was previously known as "Moltbot" or "Clawdbot".

OpenClaw is designed for users comfortable with technical setup who want an active assistant rather than a passive chat interface.

1. Key Features and Capabilities

Autonomous Actions: Unlike passive chatbots, OpenClaw can take actions like managing inboxes, scheduling meetings, or booking flights.
Persistent Memory: The AI remembers past interactions, preferences, and project statuses.
Local or Cloud Operation: It can run on your own machine (such as a Mac Mini) or a virtual private server (VPS) for continuous operation.
Modular Skills: Users can define specific tasks ("skills") for the agent to execute, such as summarizing news or researching contacts.

2. Usage Examples:

  • Morning Brief: Automatically scanning emails, calendars, and news to send a summarized daily to-do list to your phone.
  • Proactive Research: Investigating people or companies before meetings by analyzing calendar invites.
  • Task Automation: Ordering groceries, searching for information, or managing complex workflows.

3. Security Warnings:

  • High Risk: OpenClaw requires high-level permissions on local systems, making it a "dangerous" tool if malicious agents access it.
  • Prompt Injection: The agent is susceptible to commands hidden in emails or websites.
  • Data Leakage: Early versions (as "Moltbook") demonstrated risks, such as exposed API keys when not configured properly.

- OpenClaw vs. Claude

OpenClaw and Claude (specifically Claude Code/Cowork) are both advanced AI agents, but they serve different primary purposes: OpenClaw acts as a 24/7, personal, multi-tool automation assistant, whereas Claude Code is a specialized, high-performance coding agent for software development.

1. Key Differences:

  • Core Focus: OpenClaw is designed to manage life/business tasks via messaging apps (Telegram, Slack) by interacting with various websites and tools. Claude Code is for developers, working directly inside IDEs (VS Code) for code generation, debugging, and software projects.
  • Architecture & Autonomy: OpenClaw operates as a persistent "daemon" or 24/7 agent that can proactively run on a VPS or Mac Mini. Claude is a "collaborator" often used interactively to pair on projects, though it is moving toward more autonomous functionality.
  • Security & Setup: OpenClaw provides high flexibility but is often described as buggy and less secure. Claude Code runs in a more sandboxed, secure environment.
  • Interaction: OpenClaw is often used via text commands, while Claude Code works within the terminal and IDE.

2. Which to Choose?

  • Choose OpenClaw if: You need an autonomous personal agent for tasks like booking, email management, and cross-app automation.
  • Choose Claude Code if: You are a developer needing to build, refactor, or manage code repositories efficiently.
