- Overview

Computational linguistics (CL) is a field of data science that powers chatbots, search engines, and more.

Computational linguistics (CL) is an interdisciplinary field that applies computer science (and the use of algorithms) to analyze and understand written and spoken language. The field combines linguistics, computer science, artificial intelligence (AI), engineering, neuroscience, and even anthropology to understand language from a computational perspective.

When computers can understand language (whether written or spoken), this helps facilitate our interactions with software and machines, and drives advances in areas such as customer service, scientific research, and AI tools.
