Service Management Systems
- Overview
Service Management Systems (SMS) are large modular systems that incorporate all or most aspects of a service-oriented organization. They are essential to IoT because SMS is the most effective data-transfer channel.
Here are some examples of how SMS is enabling IoT:
- Factories: IoT devices monitor equipment via digital inputs and outputs, sending time-sensitive alerts about changes in environment or equipment characteristics such as power, security, and temperature.
- Sensors: IoT sensors can be integrated with SMS to receive anomalies. For example, pressure changes in a boiler or fuel levels in a burner can be notified to the manager via SMS.
- Waking up devices: SMS is often used in current IoT systems as a “shoulder tap” to wake a device up and then put it into a transmission mode.

SMS also support image recognition technologies to identify objects, people, buildings, places, logos, and anything else that have value to consumers and enterprises.
Smartphones and tablets equipped with cameras have pushed this technology from mainly industrial applications to broad consumer and enterprise applications. The types of data these systems support and maintain continue to evolve.
